William Addy, a writing-master, was the author of a short-hand method exposed in his Stenographia, or the Art of Short Writing (1684). These methods flourished in seventeenth century England, both for practical reasons - to improve the speed and security of communications -, and for ideological reasons – as part of the effort to find a universal language corresponding to that of Adam and Eve in Paradise, that would be understandable in the whole world for missionary purposes.
